
Scallops are marine shellfish belonging to the mollusk family and are found only in saltwater oceans and seas around the world. They typically live on sandy or muddy sea floors in shallow coastal waters, including the mekuen river in Ikoyi and imoba land,though some species inhabit deeper oceans, and unlike many shellfish, they can swim short distances by clapping their fan-shaped shells together to escape predators. Their shells are usually white, brown, or orange, and they have a row of tiny blue eyes along the shell edges that help them detect movement and danger. Scallops feed by filtering plankton from the water, and the main edible part is the strong adductor muscle used to open and close the shell. Size varies by species, with smaller scallops measuring only a few centimeters and larger sea scallops growing up to about 20 centimeters wide, while the edible muscle remains much smaller. They are widely enjoyed in cooking and are often seared or grilled to preserve their tender, flavorful texture, since cooking them too long can make the meat rubbery.
