Crocodiles, commonly referred to as Ooni by the Yoruba people of Nigeria, have existed for thousands of years and are believed to have evolved from dinosaurs. These reptiles inhabit various mangrove forests, including Imoba Forest. They are among the most well-known and fearsome animals in the world and are considered apex predators. Their powerful bodies, strong jaws, immense speed, agility, and exceptional stealth make them dominant hunters in their natural environments.
Crocodiles are also social animals. Similar to the Onikoyi’s belief in hierarchical order, crocodiles exhibit clear hierarchical behavior within their groups. For example, during group feeding, the largest male usually occupies the top of the hierarchy and enjoys the best basking spots in the sun. During group hunts, female crocodiles often receive preference when feeding on a large animal killed by the group.
This hierarchical behavior has been particularly observed in Nile crocodiles and Mugger crocodiles..
Crocodiles have suffered a great loss in population due to the destruction of their natural habitats such as the Mangrove forests, rivers, and wetlands where they live are being destroyed for farming, urban development, logging, and construction.
Water pollution from chemicals, plastics, and industrial waste also affects their health and reduces the number of fish and other animals they feed on. Additionally, there hunted for their skin used for making luxury leather goods such as shoes, bag and belts.
