Catfish are a diverse group of ray-finned fish found in both freshwater and coastal environments, such as the Lagos Lagoon and the Mekuen River (Ode Mekuen) in Ikoyi and Imoba Land. They are named for their prominent, whisker-like sensory organs around the mouth called barbels.Catfish are commonly cultivated commercially for food, while many smaller species, some as tiny as 1 cm, are popular in the aquarium trade. All catfish lack scales; their bodies are either “naked,” covered by a protective mucus layer, or armored with bony plates (scutes) that serve as protection.
Typically nocturnal bottom-feeders, catfish possess strong, hollow, bony spines at the front of their dorsal and pectoral fins. They also exhibit a remarkable range in size from the minute Candiru species to the massive Mekong giant catfish and Wels catfish, which can grow up to 10–15 feet in length and weigh hundreds of pounds.
